Biography

I am the Director of the UNM Center for Surgical Critical Care, and the Founding Director and President of the Society of Critical Care Medicine- New Mexico Chapter. I trained at the University of New Mexico in Emergency Medicine for my primary specialty, and then went on to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland for my surgical critical care fellowship. During fellowship, I was awarded the Aurelio Rodriguez Fellow of the Year award, the first to be given to a non-surgeon in the history of the award. I am boarded in Emergency Medicine, Neurologic Critical Care, and Critical Care via the European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine. I am active clinically, practicing in the Neurosurgical, Trauma Surgical, and Cardiothoracic ICUs. I have published numerous articles and book chapters. I speak nationally on many critical care topics, including Airway Pressure Release Ventilation, a ventilator mode I pioneered at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center. I have a son and three stepchildren and am currently engaged to Dr. Lizabeth Rosenbaum. I love skiing, golf, guitar and am overall a bon vivant!
