Class of 2019

University of Texas Medical School, Houston

Vacation selfieName: Nick (Nico) Parchim

Hometown: Natchitoches (Nack-uh-dish), LA "The City of Lights"

Undergrad: Loyola University—New Orleans

Life before med school: I helped rehab houses and teach inner city school children after Hurricane Katrina. At night, I danced for the Loyola ballet and a folk dance company called Komenka. Then, for about a year, I waited tables at a famous NOLA restaurant called Commanders Palace--a must-visit for anyone who travels to New Orleans.

Med school: The McGovern School of Medicine UT-Houston

Worst/best job: Commander's Palace for both. It was simultaneously a great job, and the hardest I've ever worked (except for in the ED). Customer service is key! Waiting tables teaches you about how to deal with difficult and impossible-to-please personalities. J

Hobbies: Running, hiking, climbing, cooking, grilling…really anything involving outdoors or food. Plus, I plan to become the best skier this side of the Mississippi!

Favorite band: Just one? I have an eclectic taste, but the White Stripes and Sia are frequently on my playlists.

Favorite movie: Forrest Gump. I've seen it >50 times and you will often catch me quoting its wisdom.

Why Albuquerque: After living in Houston, my husband and I wanted something smaller than 5 million people. It's hard to find a smaller city with an amazing research institute and fantastic training program, but we were happy to find it in ABQ. Plus, you can't beat the scenery and >300 days of sunshine!

Anything else interesting: My husband and I got married at the courthouse the night before the match. We figured if we didn't match to UNM, we could still have fun celebrating our marriage. As it turned out, we got to do a double celebration!
