Biography

Name: Victor R. Salgado

Hometown: Dover, DE

Undergrad: University of New Mexico

Life before med school: I lived a lot of life before med school and I worked many jobs. Here is an incomplete list of the things I had done in the 20 years before med school: Phlebotomist, Ochem tutor, security for lockdown drug rehab, mobile home salesman, restaurant owner/operator, dishwasher, newspaper boy, IT, & cook. I also married a great woman and had 2 beautiful children.

Med school: University of New Mexico SOM

Worst/best job: Every job has provided me with valuable work experience, even the bad ones. The worst job I had was when I had no job at all. At 32 years old I was unemployed for 7 months. Organic chemistry tutor at UNM was the job I enjoyed the most because it's a great feeling to facilitate learning.

Hobbies: Spending time with my wife and kids (although it's more a way of life than a hobby), weightlifting, watching sports on TV and in person

Favorite band: Metallica and Nine Inch Nails are my all time favorites. These days, my favorite artists are Drake and Florence & the Machine.

Favorite movie: Full Metal Jacket but I watch What Dreams May Come when I'm feeling emotional

Why Albuquerque: I knew I would get a level of training which is second to none, especially when it comes to critical care. You get the best of a county and academic program here at UNM. Our program director is an incredible person and I love our patient population. As for the city, the weather is amazing. Albuquerque is a really big small town. It's a great place to raise a family and let's face it, I'm a lifer.
