Why Albuquerque: I did a rotation here and loved it. I primarily came for the people. The attendings were fantastic teachers. The residents were enthusiastic, helpful, and very competent. I felt like I belonged here. Additionally, I wanted a county hospital with emphasis on public health, and I found that here. The patient population is unique and there is great need for healthcare services.
I also really like New Mexico. I was a medic at Philmont boy-scout ranch in Cimarron, NM in my fourth year of medical school. On days off I got to explore the beautiful mountains. I wanted to come back as soon as I’d left.
Life before med school: I was a waitress for 10 years before and during college. I also worked as a patient care assistant and a medical scribe during undergrad.
Hobbies: Rollerskating/blading (used to do roller derby, now learning aggressive), music composition, painting, growing/killing tropical fruit trees, hiking
Worst/best job: My worst job was working in medical billing. I was basically a bill collector. I really enjoyed working as a scribe and getting paid to shadow. However, my best job was working as a patient care assistant in the emergency department. I felt like I was part of the team and improving department flow and patient care.
