Why Albuquerque: During medical school I enjoyed working in the health lodge of a large youth camp in New Mexico, and so I excitedly came back to New Mexico for an emergency medicine externship. Everyone I encountered in the program proved incredibly bright and very down to earth. Strengths of the program in critical care and wilderness/austere medicine aligned well with my varied interests. The commitment to the underserved and the local community also made the program very attractive. UNM offered a great opportunity for my significant other to attend graduate school in the Department of Biology. Finally, the culture of Albuquerque and all of the amazing outdoor opportunities nearby made the program a perfect fit for me.
Life before med school: I followed the traditional path through medical school with a few amazing experiences along the way. During high school I ran with bulls in Pamplona, Spain. I also lived for several months in Peru during college, where I trekked through the Amazon and swam with some piranhas.
Hobbies: I spent many years competing in track and field. Since then I’ve transitioned to trail and long distance running. Prior to residency I ran a 44 mile race from one brewery to another. The beer at the end of the race never tasted better! Since arriving in Albuquerque I’ve run a ton in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains and raced up La Luz Trail Run. I also enjoy hiking, skiing and biking. This year I’ve started exploring mountain rescue. When I’m not running or spending time outdoors, I home brew different varieties of beer.
Worst/best job: Although I enjoyed the physical labor of working commercial construction, the hard work combined with the wind and sun in Kansas wasn’t always the most fun. The tough work of construction contrasted well with one of my favorite jobs lounging beside the pool as a lifeguard. I also liked working as a teaching assistant for several undergraduate science classes.
Favorite band: I like almost every type of music and recently have been exploring the genre of Tropical House. Some of my favorite artists currently are Kygo and Matoma.
Favorite movie: Several of my favorites include Crash, The Shawshank Redemption, Good Will Hunting, Inception and Gladiator.
Anything else interesting: If you swing by my house for a home brewed beer you can say hello to my friendly Siberian Husky puppy.
