I currently work part time in the Pediatric Emergency Department at UNM. My interest in Global Health involves two specific projects. I do work as a field pediatrician with Doctors Without Borders: recent missions include a trip to the Central African Republic for three months during summer 2014, where I was working in a remote field hospital amidst internal rebel conflict that has destroyed the health care system. I am also project director for LifeStitches Uganda, a small Albuquerque-based NGO founded in 2007 that operates economic empowerment projects for HIV-positive women and educational empowerment projects for AIDS orphans in West Nile Uganda. Much of the research/outcome evaluation work that I do is generated by these projects.

Teaching Interests

  • Global Health with focus sub-Saharan Africa

Research Interests

  • AIDS-related Stigma for HIV-positive women in sub-Saharan Africa; the role of economic empowerment in developing self-efficacy to (1) overcome AIDS stigma and (2) to increase uptake in Prevention Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) medical programs
