Gillian Baty, MD, MPH, FACEP

Dr. Baty came to New Mexico for its residency, and returned after ultrasound fellowship for the whole package. She started the first core Ultrasound rotation at UNM, then rapidly expanded this to include two training years, a medical student elective, as well as incorporating fellows and inter-departmental collaborative ultrasound activities. After several years serving as both Associate Program Director and Emergency Ultrasound Director, she became Program Director in July, 2018.

Sylvia Alden, MD, FACEP

Dr. Alden is a true blue New Mexican who is dedicated to the educational endeavors in this state. As part of her Education Fellowship, she was an ACEP Teaching Fellow, completed the ALiEM Faculty Incubator Education. A year at the University of North Carolina as teaching faculty allowed her to bring an outside perspective to UNM when she returned in July, 2018. She has served as UNM School of Medicine Transitions Block Director since returning, allowing her to continue the strong connections between our department and the school of medicine.

Ryan Van Otten, MA
Program Manager

Ryan is a distinctive personality with a unique background. After receiving his undergraduate and graduate degrees from UNM, he spent several years managing a Veterinary practice in rural New Mexico. He joined the team in 2015 as the fellowship coordinator and then was promoted to Program Manager in 2019. He oversees the daily operations of the department’s graduate medical education programs. He and his team are dedicated to our learners and strive to improve all of the programs they support.

Shelby Madrid

Shelby Madrid, BA
Program Coordinator

Shelby has been with UNM for almost 15 years and various roles. She spent 5 years in the department of internal medicine as a fellowship coordinator and joined emergency medicine in 2015 as the residency coordinator. She is an advocate for her residents and will go above and beyond to help them succeed in our program.
